Llewellyn Xavier
Llewellyn Xavier OBE is St. Lucia's Premier artist. - Born in St. Lucia on October 12th 1945, he became an agricultural apprentice and went to Barbados in 1961 where a friend gave him a box of watercolour paints. He started to paint and his genius was immediately apparent. His first exhibition was a sell out and he rapidly established an international reputation. In 1968 he moved to England and created Mail Art, a new concept in modern art that gained critical acclaim and is now being used by hundreds of artists globally.

In 1979, he enrolled as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. It was a time of great spiritual awakening, and for a time he became a Cistercian monk in Montreal having sold all his worldly possessions. He realised, however, that art was his life and in 1987 he married and returned to St. Lucia.

In 1993, his intense concern for the environment led to his masterpiece, "Global Council for Restoration of the Earth's Environment" which had it's world premiere at the Patrick Cramer Gallery in Geneva, Switzerland in May of that year. The work incorporated recycled materials, eighteenth and nineteenth century prints of birds, animals, fish and plants, many of them now extinct, and postage stamps from around the world, as well as the signatures of world environmental leaders and conservationists.

In 2004, Llewellyn Xavier received the OBE, Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his contribution to art, a career that has spanned 40 years.

He is currently working on a series titled "Environment Fragile", whose central goal is to awaken world consciousness to the wanton destruction of the earth's environment.

Mr. Xavier has exhibited at some of the finest art institutions internationally and his work is in the permanent collections of the leading museums of the western world including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York, the American Museum of Natural History - New York, the Smithsonian Institution - Washington, DC, the Art Gallery of Ontario - Toronto, Oxford University - England, The National Gallery - Jamaica, The Studio Museum - New York, The Wolverhampton Art Gallery - England, Loughborough University - England, UNESCO , among others.

"Llewellyn Xavier communicates the sensuality and unspoilt beauty of the island through his art, making him one of St. Lucia's best ambassadors."
