Hotel On The Cay

Hotel on the Cay, located on a lush, five-acre cay, has a long history of intrigue dating back to the 17th century when pirates anchored their ships off the beach where guests now sunbathe, swim and snorkel. This 50-year-old property is a combination hotel and time-share located on Protestant Cay, a two-minute ferry ride from downtown Christiansted. Under new management, the hotel is being renovated as St. Croix's leading eco-tourism destination.

In 1977, Protestant Cay was designated by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as one of two protected critical habitats (and only commercial Cay) for the endangered St. Croix Ground Lizard--recognized as one of the rarest lizards in the world and numbered under 200 on Protestant Cay. Visitors are very fortunate to be able to see these beautiful lizards daily. Unfortunately, most endangered species are not so easy to find!

Hotel on the Cay guests also enjoy various sea birds: cattle egrets, blue heron, brown pelicans, and the rare white-crowned pigeon that has recently taken up residency among the palms and mahogany trees. In addition, an amazing natural garden of Agave eggersiana plants, which will soon be designated as Endangered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, has been uncovered on the north slope.

A small, pristine beach overlooks Christiansted Harbor's beautiful boats, making perfect photos at sunset. As the only beach in downtown Christiansted, you will find other hotel guests and locals who enjoy swimming and snorkelling the amazing undersea world surrounding the Cay (expect to see octopus and spotted eagle rays). Water sport rentals are available on-site.
